AGRICULTURAL EDUCATIONAL TOUR IN NORTHERN NEVADA:

Join fellow forage enthusiasts for an agricultural tour to Fallon, Nevada, a short drive from Reno. We will visit a large western dairy production operation, discuss feeding strategies, manure management and the current dairy situation with local dairy producers. Visit a specialized goat dairy targeting specialty markets – including utilizing semi-automated feeding strategies for small ruminants. Take a break and visit the Frey Ranch Distillery, started by Nevada farmers where they make whiskey and other spirits with local desert-grown grains (barley, wheat, rye corn). Perhaps indulge in a little tasting? Next, stop at the Derby Dam and Newlands water project and learn about the myriad water issues facing this desert state. This was the first Bureau of Reclamation project undertaken by the US government, and the many demands illustrates the water issues Nevada faces. The last stop is at a hay export operation, where we will learn about the techniques used for double compression, and the different types of alfalfa & grassy hays frequently exported. Pest Control (PCA) and Certified Crop (CCA) Continuing Education Credits offered (Includes on-bus video training opportunity for pest management). Separate pre-registration is required. Limited space available.
